Because macrofauna are over represented

Photos from my sea expedition (part 1)

I started my trip in Oregon and saw sea lions for the first time! They were so noisy! One would start barking and then they would all chime in. I wanted to post a video, but I need to upgrade my blog account to support video files, so here is a youtube link instead.

The next thing I did was check in on the ship and settle into my bunk.

My gym for the month. It was a small space with a concrete floor. The ship was in choppy seas for most of the expedition, so I couldn’t really do kicks or jump rope. I made the best of it though when I had the chance

Everything has to be secured onto the counter tops or the floor in case we encounter high swell at sea.

We ate well. Food on a research expedition is REALLY good.

This is an incubator that we had to build for one of our experiments. It looks DIY and we called it “Not a bomb” because we had to travel with it and go through customs.

This was a probe that the other science team that we traveled with was working on. It’s a high pressure temperature sensor for hydrothermal vent measurements.

This is where I spent most of my time on the ship, on the RAD van. I use radioactive carbon to label enzymes that I am interested in. It needs to be contained in the space that I work in so that I don’t contaminate anybody’s work.

Next time I will post the pictures from when I went to the bottom of the ocean in the ALVIN. Until then, happy travels and keep reaching for your dreams!
